What happened to all the skirts?

So something of an unusual rant this time, and it may seem strange but I was out last night and I noticed just how unpopular they had become. Obviously excluding men from the equation, I don't think I saw a single skirt or dress in the entire night; the trend for a simple top and jeans as acceptable nightwear has seemed to be subtly increasing to the point that either I'm hitting all the wrong spots (and need somewhere 'classier' perhaps) or they're becoming extinct. Thinking about it further, its not just nightwear that they've seen a decline but in general use; I sometimes get the impression more skirts are worn by blokes during christmas piss-ups and stag nights than any other time! It's getting to the stage that I'm having difficulty thinking of fashionable items worn outside of film premières, the retro-70s crowd, the stereotyped goth crowd, school girls and weddings, and I don't quite understand why to the modern eye they're seen in such a manner.

Are women now so self conscious of their bodies that they feel the need to cover their legs? Then why are so many finding ever-lower cut tops and new ways to expose muffin tops instead? And even if you were self conscious, nobody mentioned anything with regards to the length; it could quite easily be long enough to hide any unfathomed neuroticism you harbour about the shape of your legs with far more success than trousers and still add an element of elegance; the manner in which it flows and wraps itself around you, gently flailing in the wind, not to mention disguising the awkwardness of foot movement whilst dancing. It's very common for people to forget to move the feet at all whilst dancing (of course my problem is simply that I'm a lousy dancer, before anyone remarks on this. Knowing theory is one thing but putting it into practice is something else entirely) so sure minimising attention to this can only be a good thing?

Clubbing has its sexual connotations too of course, but I don't see how wearing plain, dull jeans or the like, blending completely into the crowd in any way makes you stand out. There's no element of thought or personal taste (beyond which shade of blue to go with), no sense of elegance or grace, and perhaps all this is simply a sign of the changing times. Or maybe this has always been the case and this is yet another case of me turning into an old man before my years, but I don't get it. Surely there's still something to be said for uniqueness of taste? But y'know, far be it from me to convince anyone to change their ways or make them think, more or less impose my own opinion on them. So women of the world, go ahead and continue being boring. Raise boring assed kids. Only read 'Heat' and whatever book sounds trashy, romantic, and happens to be in the bestsellers list; only watch films that first made an appearance at a major cinema; and whatever you do, don't have an opinion on anything that might be construed as important, or if you must, make sure its the most popular opinion. Who knows, one day someone might start a trend of clothes just for you, a line that will become universally accepted as the only thing you can wear; we'll all be robbed of our individuality and freedom to express ourselves thanks to convention. THX-1138 will become a reality, and I for one will miss the little sparks of creativity.

Note: In fairness, finding photo's of creative and interesting dresses proved more difficult than I expected; is there simply no interest in anything that isn't boring? For those interested, I ended up stealing these photo's from an online store called iOffer
